Christmas Day falls on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 on the Julian calendar. December 25 as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not widely considered to be his actual date of birth.
Christmas is celebrated in most countries around the world, owing to the spread of Christianity and Western culture. Various local and regional Christmas traditions are still practiced. [wikipedia]
Many families and friends celebrate Christmas by giving each other presents. I found this quote on the internet:
The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. ~Burton Hillis
To many people, Christmas is a time of love, celebration, happiness and spending quality time with your family.
Well, not for me. Christmas this year (and all other years) meant stuffing myself yummy stuff, presents, decorating a tree, food from a can while the rest of the family eats fish and monopoly for me. And an afternoon with my aunt, uncle and cousins from mom's side.
The week after Sinterklaas, which I enjoy so much more than Christmas, we bought a tree. It was €12,50 at the Gamma. You guessed that right, it's pretty small. Our high ceilings emphasize it's gnomeishness even more.
[Yes, I know this is one of the worst photos ever. The Christmas lights are off, there are dead flowers in the foreground, the tree looks lifeless.. Oh well. If you're wondering what the white spots on the windows are, they're stickers. White window stickers in the shapes of angels, reindeer, Santa, snowmen, houses, trees etc. They're good fun.]
As some of you may know, Matthijs and I don't eat fish unless it's a fish stick. I can't stand the smell and I hate the texture. So on the 25th, while my parents and other brother had a plate with salmon, eel, shrimp and other 'good' stuff, Matthijs and I had tomato soup from the Albert Heijn. For the main course there was pasta and some other fishy thing, so we had turkey. From the Albert Heijn. It's not that Albert Heijn can't cook - don't get me wrong, I liked the food - but it'd be nice if for once we could have a meal where I don't feel like I'm getting leftovers, or that I'm not worth putting effort into. You can't call putting soup in a microwave hard work, especially when you've been working on your fishy thing for two hours.
Anyway, before and after dinner we played Monopoly. Bas turned out to be a liar, and Boude discovered a new 'Bumbombum' dance. If I had a video I'd show it, but unfortunately nobody taped it. Even though in the beginning I was the poorest ("pauper kind!") I soon began making money and I felt like Oprah, climbing up and eventually becoming one of the richest. Matthijs lost all his money and property so he joined me and my growing empire. Bas lied half way through, which changed the whole game. He was cashing in lots of money. At 11.45pm my mom gave up, Matthijs and I decided to quit, so we proclaimed Bas as the winner. Boy did he feel proud.
Yesterday we had my aunt, uncle and their kids over. Those little buggers are so cute. One of them came up to my room with a Santa hat on, went "Hi Maxime!" and was just really excited and happy. We all went to Kijkduin for a walk in the dunes which meant freezing fingers for me. Although I did get to see if my new coat was any good at keeping me warm -which it did.
Right now I'm sitting here in my room, which I tried tidying up yesterday morning, with my ubercool purple boots, my skirt from London and a new blazer. I is feeling good, despite my runny nose. It's as runny as an Ethiopian at the Olympics.
To stay in the holiday mood, here's Queen:

Queen's cool!
You know, that bright mint colour can't be good for your eyes...
I made a picture of our ginormstrous christmas tree yesterday, I'll put it in a post today. Your gnomeish tree isn't that bad, it's better than the tree my dad had (50 cm)...
50cm! That's not a tree, that's a plant.
Did I say Queen wasn't cool? I quite like them. At times.
The colour is nice!
